First and foremost is choosing the format for your newsletter. There are several different formats to choose from, and choosing the right format depends on your needs and experience; but first, you need to know what your options are; and what advantages and disadvantages exists for each format, so you can choose the best one for your newsletter.

The most common newsletter formats are HTML, plain text, and PDF. All have both advantages and disadvantages, so what one should you choose?

HTML is the most common format, because it has the ability to use graphics and create text links, making your news letter look more professional in its design and layout;  but you need to be familiar with HTML coding to create your templates. However, you can purchase an HTML design software program instead. Nvu is a free software program available on its website. The best HTML design available for purchase is Adobe Dreamweaver.

Plain text format is the easiest format for your newsletter. No HTML coding and design is required; you simply create it in NotePad, which is available in Windows. The advantage is that there’s no need to create any graphics or worry about compatibility with your different email clients.

PDF is a popular newsletter format. It has the most professional look, but is also the most difficult to create. You need to create each issue in Microsoft Word first, and then convert it into PDF using special software.

There are also ready-made newsletter templates that are available for free. These allow you to make changes to the templates without penalty or charges. What you use depends on your time, budget and experience.
